Training Methods

Classroom

Classroom training, aka "Class", is instruction in a classroom setting, provided to a group of trainees, and conducted by a qualified instructor.

Laboratory

Laboratory training, aka "Lab", is hands-on instruction or skill acquisition under the constant and direct guidance of a qualified trainer. Laboratory training may require the use of specialized equipment or facilities. Laboratory training may be conducted in a simulated work setting, or at a productive work setting, aka Productive Laboratory.

Electronic Delivery Training

Electronic Delivery Training falls into three categories:

  • Computer-Based-Training aka CBT - is training delivered through a computer program at a pace set by the trainee. There is no requirement for delivery by a live trainer and training does not have to be interactive.

  • Video Conference - is training that is live, interactive instruction provided by a trainer through a video communications session.

  • E-Learning - is instruction delivered by a live trainer through a web-based system, conducted in a virtual environment utilizing web meeting/webinar

Class Sizes (Trainer-to-Trainee Ratios)

  • Classroom/laboratory trainer-to-trainee ratio is 1:15 for new hire classes and 1:20 for retraining classes.
  • Productive Laboratory trainer to trainee ratio is 1:10 for new hire and retraining classes
  • Electronic Delivery Training:
    • Computer-Based-Training trainer to trainee ratio is Not Applicable
    • Video Conference trainer-to-trainee ratio is 1:20 for new hire and retraining classes.
    • E-Learning trainer-to-trainee ratio is 1:20 for new hire and retraining classes.

Types of Training

ETP can fund a wide variety of training programs. Historically, the following have been the most commonly funded types of programs:

  • Quality Management Principles
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Advanced Technology
  • Production Techniques
  • Computer Skills
  • Materials Resource Planning (MRP)
  • Customer Service
  • Management Skills
  • Sales Techniques
  • Computer Numerical Control

Funding is not limited to these types of training, however. Your company can decide what types of training will be provided. Training can be provided in house, by a training agency, or by a third party. Training providers should be California based, unless the training is so unique that a training provider cannot be found in California. Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) requires evaluation of trainee's English ability and may not typically exceed 45 percent of the remaining total skills training per trainee.
