ETP Continues to Support Healthcare Training

In response to California's severe shortage of healthcare professionals, ETP continues to invest in healthcare training projects to train highly skilled workers. Last year, the Panel funded $5.3 million in healthcare training programs, primarily for registered nurse specialty training and certified nurse to licensed vocational nurse upgrade training, with over 3,700 health care workers participating.

As a further example of ETP's commitment toward meeting the need for healthcare related training, in November 2007, the Panel awarded a $499,392 job training contract to Mt. View Child Care, Inc., dba Totally Kids Specialty Healthcare, to help the organization deal with a severe shortage of nurses and critical care personnel that specialize in a particular type of care in its San Bernardino and Los Angeles (Sun Valley) facilities.

Founded in 1994, Totally Kids Specialty Healthcare operates two long term healthcare facilities for developmentally disabled children who are dependent on around-the-clock medical care and technology for their survival. ETP training funds will be used to provide specialized training for 408 new and current employees in more advanced and sophisticated equipment and medical practices, allowing them to work more flexibly in a team environment.

Most importantly, the newly trained personnel will be well equipped to provide the very high level of care required by these children. Trainees will receive up to 200 hours of training in clinical skills, advanced technology and other skills that will lead to better care and improved quality of life for all patients.

"The children in our care depend on us to keep up with advances in technology, while maintaining the vital 'human touch'," states Doug Padgett, Totally Kids Specialty Healthcare's' President. "ETP funding is going to make a difference in their lives by helping us improve our team approach to patient care by involving staff, residents and families in our care model, providing our current employees with the specialized skills needed to provide efficient and effective patient care, and allowing new employees to rapidly integrate into the company's team philosophy."

ETP is pleased to be part of the State's response to the nurse shortage problem, and will continue to seek training solutions to meet the healthcare needs of California's citizens.
