Entrepreneurial Training Program
ETP funds entrepreneurial training for small business owners employing between 1-9 full-time workers. This type of training includes basic business and management skills, human resources training, and training in marketing, sales, accounting, and other skills needed to successfully operate a small business.
In order to assure successful training programs, ETP contracts with organizations with expertise in small business training, such as Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) or local chambers of commerce.
Because most small business owners may be experts in a particular type of business or product, but lack the skills to successfully manage a business, specialized training in business basics is vital not only for the survival of these small firms, but to help them thrive.
On average, companies participating in ETP's entrepreneurial training program actually increased employment by 30 percent, an indicator that these projects are very beneficial to participating companies. Also, entrepreneurial training is a vital economic development tool throughout the state because the vast majority of California companies, both rural and urban, employ less that 9 workers.
In an effort to bolster assistance to small business owners, ETP recently increased entrepreneurial training reimbursement rates to $22 per person per training hour, and is actively seeking organizations throughout the state that can provide successful training program for small business owners.
In September, the Panel approved a $78,700 contract with the University of San Diego, Division of Continuing Education to provide 80 small business owners with up to 40 hours of training in high performance management skills, such as operations management for peak performance, setting up fiscal control systems, and developing marketing plans.
In October, the Panel approved a $200,210 contract with CHARO Community Development Center to train 150 small business owners in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties in topics such as business skills, computer skills, management skills and literacy skills. These small business owners will receive up to 80 hours of training in order to better manage and lead their companies.
ETP is actively expanding its efforts to reach small businesses and small business owners. For those interested in applying for entrepreneurial training funds, please contact Charles Lundberg, ETP's Economic Development Director, at 916-327-5261 or clundberg@etp.ca.gov.
