    Investing in California's Manufacturers

California's manufacturing industry has lost thousands of jobs over the last few years. However, this industry is vital to the state due to its high multiplier effect and potential for creating new high-paying jobs. This will only occur, however, if California's manufacturers can compete globally.

Even though jobs have been lost, a recent study by a national manufacturing industry association found that a serious skilled worker shortage is also threatening the manufacturing industry. The study concludes that only through extensive job training can companies actually become globally competitive.

ETP continues to assist California manufacturers remain successful by investing in job training programs to upgrade the skills of their workers. Through partnerships with state-wide organizations, such as the California Manufacturing & Technology Association, last year alone ETP awarded $33 million in job training funds to manufacturing firms to upgrade and enhance the skills over 33,500 workers.

ETP serves manufacturers in two ways. First, companies can apply directly to us for customized job training programs. Training is usually provided by the employer, with assistance from outside training vendors, community colleges, or other training providers. Another option is for employers to access our funds through employer associations, training agencies, or other multiple employer contractors that have contracts in place.

Santa Cruz Millwork, a small manufacturer of wooden doors and windows with only seven employees, is one example of how ETP training funds continue to bolster the manufacturing industry. The company introduced lean manufacturing techniques that helped improve the quality of the finished product, while, at the same time, reducing wasted material and scrap. According to the owner, Thomas Nedelsky, "With the help of ETP, we were able to learn and implement a number of concepts of Lean Manufacturing. The success we have had with the implementation of what we learned has been very rewarding."
