Budget Increases by Over 40 Percent

The Employment Training Panel has something to cheer about. The Governor has approved a program budget increase, which means that ETP's appropriation for the 2006/2007 fiscal year will be $53.2 million, more than a 40 percent increase over last fiscal year's appropriation. This budget is the largest amount appropriated to ETP in five years.

The joint efforts of the Panel, the California Chamber of Commerce, the California Manufacturing & Technology Association, the California Labor Federation AFL/CIO, and other large and small businesses and associations resulted in the Legislature's and Administration's support of the budget augmentation. This is a real victory for employers and workers!

This budget increase means additional funding for training that benefits both companies and labor. The business community will benefit from a more productive and skilled workforce, enabling them to better compete in the global economy while the labor community will gain increased wages and secure employment opportunities. In addition to continuing its role as an incentive in key business attraction and retention projects, ETP will also be able to target key industries that are vital to the success of California's economy, including small businesses, biotech and life science companies, while continuing to assist manufacturers and their suppliers.

Now is the time to review your training needs. ETP is eager to work with eligible employers, Workforce Investment Boards, and training agencies to develop job training funding applications for Panel consideration. Contact Charles Lundberg, Economic Development Director at 916-327-5261 or at clundberg@etp.ca.gov to learn more about the application process.

We look forward to working with you.
