    Support for California Biomed Firms

In an effort to promote the expansion of biomedical firms in California, ETP is focused on assisting biotech, medical product manufacturing companies, and other related firms to grow beyond simply research and development into fully operational manufacturing firms. It is no secret that these "bio" companies need highly skilled workers in order to survive, and that federal government agencies, such as the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), require extensive training and training documentation before their products can be sold.

ETP is supporting this growing California industry through job training funds. Since 2004, ETP has funded 30 agreements totaling more than $15 million for the training of over 11,000 workers in companies engaged in biological, pharmaceutical and genetic research, clinical testing, biological and pharmaceutical product engineering and manufacturing, and medical product and equipment distribution. Genentech, Agilent Technologies, Abbott Diabetes Care, Invitrogen, Hospira, Edwards Lifesciences, and Spectra Laboratories are just a sampling of companies utilizing ETP funding in their expansion efforts.

ETP played a major role in Genentech's decision to expand in California. The company chose to build its new factory in California based on factors that included ETP funding for job training. Genentech chose to locate its plant in Vacaville in 1994, and is now building a new manufacturing site right next door to its current facility.

Working with organizations around the State, such as BayBio, Biocom, the California Healthcare Institute, and the Biotech System Regional Consortium, ETP is reaching out to biomed firms seeking not only to upgrade the skills of current workers, but to also train new employees entering this fast-growing industry.

For more information on ETP's efforts to assist the biomed industry, or on how to apply for ETP funding, contact Charles Lundberg, Economic Development Director, at clundberg@etp.ca.gov or 916-327-5261.
