ETP's Funding Year is Rapidly Coming to a Close
It is anticipated that the Panel will be considering no more than $6.8 million worth of job training contracts at its April 2008 meeting, thereby exhausting all of its current year program funds. However, the program currently has about 262 projects in development, totaling over $53 million, which will be ready for funding through ETP's FY2008/09 appropriation.
The Governor's Budget as introduced reflects strong support for the Employment Training Panel program with an appropriation for Fiscal Year 2008/09 at the same level as the current year despite this year's difficult budget picture. State agencies are now engaged with the Legislature in it's review of their budgets for the coming fiscal year. The process is likely to be difficult and possibly protracted, leaving some uncertainty as to how ETP and its stakeholders ultimately may be impacted by a final budget agreement.
Reflecting a growing awareness of the program and the importance of workforce preparation, ETP is experiencing increased demand for training funds. The number of preliminary applications submitted to date this fiscal year is running about 35 percent above last year's submittals at this same time. ETP recognizes its important role in maintaining the competitiveness of our state's economy and employers, and are committed to working with the state's business in developing training projects that optimally meet their workforce development needs.
