Demand for ETP Funds Increasing Rapidly

As the State's fiscal year comes to an end, there are trends that are becoming obvious to ETP -- the rapid increase in the number of preliminary and final applications, and the reduction in the dollar amounts associated with those applications.

The increase in applications reflects a growing demand for training funds, as well as an increased awareness of the ETP program. The reduction in the average dollar amount of the applications appears to be a reflection of the small business community's interest and increased use of the program, as well as some funding limitations implemented by the Panel to ensure that there are adequate funds for the state's critical industries.

The number of preliminary applications submitted to date this fiscal year is running about 30 percent above last year's totals for the same time period - one reason the Panel will exhaust all of its current year program funds by May, 2007. Currently, the program has about 150 projects in development, totaling more than $50 million that should be ready for funding through ETP's FY 2007/08 appropriation.

This is the time of year that all state agencies are heavily involved in the budget process to determine how much money will be available for their FY 2007/08 program operations. Currently, ETP's proposed appropriation reflects a 5 percent increase over its current fiscal year budget, but the final amount will not be known until the budget process is completed in June 2007.

The increasing demand for ETP funds will most certainly increase the competition for training funding next year. Thus, in order to meet your training needs, it is important not to delay applying for ETP training funds. For more information on ETP's funding outlook and/or how to apply for training funds, contact Charles Lundberg, ETP's Economic Development Director, at 916-327-5261 or clundberg@etp.ca.gov.
