ETP has Job Training Funds for the Central Valley
Since its inception in 1983, ETP has been committed to assisting California communities that trail the rest of the state in economic growth and vitality. In conjunction with Governor Schwarzenegger's California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley, the Panel has strived to provide training dollars to the Central Valley and surrounding regions that experience extraordinarily high levels of unemployment.
It is a fact that companies will not invest in areas lacking a skilled workforce -- a real barrier to a region's economic vitality. In order to spur economic growth in areas of high unemployment, job training is critical. ETP continues to actively seek partners within the San Joaquin Valley and other rural areas of the state to assist in job skills development through ETP-funded training.
An example of ETP's efforts is its partnership with the Kern Community College District, which was recently awarded an ETP contract in the amount of $498,960 to train more than 430 workers in industries such as production, transportation/logistics, construction and warehousing, in an effort to bring good paying jobs and job security to the region. This training will be conducted in several parts of the Valley and will expand from five participating community colleges to 14 within the two year period of the contract.
ETP also provides job training funds directly to employers so that they can upgrade the skills of their current workers in an effort to prevent future layoffs. For instance, ETP recently awarded a contract in the amount of $10,560 to train 12 employees of a small agricultural fertilizer company, Verdegaal Brothers located in Kings County.
ETP also partners with trade associations, such as the Western Growers Association (WGA), to reach California's Central Valley and rural area growers. In February, WGA was awarded a $500,000 contract to train 650 employees of farms, packers and ranches in a variety of skills.
Job training funds are available, and ETP is seeking to expand its outreach to training partners and employers to assist in the revitalization of the Central Valley and surrounding regions. For more information on how to apply for these funds, contact Charles Lundberg, ETP's Economic Development Director, at 916-327-5261 or clundberg@etp.ca.gov.
